Pre-election

(we did have one didn’t we??)

Have you ever stopped to think, i mean really just taken the time out to think? Our country is not getting on so well with its bank manager, we have lives being lost both at home and on forgein fields. Respect, morals and general acts of kindness, all things good are slowly falling from our grasp… and what are we doing now? We are trying to work out who to vote for on may the 6th. We have the arena we have the contentenders, although do we have our country’s interest at heart? Or are we at each others throats in a search for power? We have heard what each party stands for , what they want to do to improve ours and our friends and family’s quality of life. Well is there really anytime to think? No, but thats politics for you.

We may be trying to recover from a recession, our country may be in debt up to its eyeballs however, as they say, there is always someone worse of than yourself. In comparison to the rest of the world… we are doing quite well, don’t you think? For now try and forget all of your problems just briefly , no matter how horrendous…. try and imagine this….

The world is a place of terror with people dying everyday admist raining bullets, showering shells. People are being treated worse than cattle or battery hens, forced to hide from the sun in case they should be ripped from their homes and sent to gas chambers. The only thing time that you are able to rest at all is when the terror is broken by brief periods of fear. What am i talking about? The 2nd world war! As we look upon the three men competeing in the race for number ten, faced merely with financial unrest and a state of negativity within society to face. Brown , Cameron and Clegg, need to impress voters to win that cross on the ballot papers. What would they do if they had to reassure the frightened masses that there was a blue sky behind the clouds. That peace would return and the smog of horror would lift. What would they do if they were in the place of

The Late Great Winston churchil

Now popularity and debating skills are not a bad thing, but what good would they alone do to comfort a public living tormented at the thought of being conquered by the nazi party. In fear of their family becoming a mere statistic inside a camp such as belson? No what we needed was charisma , leadership, faith, hope and someone to remind us that it was worthwhile to carry on. This we had, and it came in the form of prime minister Winston churchil. Churchills first speech as prime minister bought hope and faith back to the people. Granted not a great deal, but this is what we needed. As he stood and spoke of his beloved country, of the brave and courageous service men and women who were risking all for the lives of the british public… that public stopped , they stopped and they listend as he spoke of the futre. On the 19th of may Winston churchil spoke of what our soldiers were facing, he gave us hope as we thought of what it was our forces were risking to save our lives, we realised we could not let their efforts go to waste! He asked us to be brave as he told us ”we must not allow ourselves to be intimidated”. None were sure why exactly but, the words of that prime minister told us that we must carry on. People heard his speeches in the streets , they listend to him on the wireless and those that did neither, did not wait long before they were told by someone who did!

Churchil spoke of our forces standing in the face of death and made it clear that we had to supply our armies with all they needed to support them in the war effort. As they were giving all they had, their lives, to support us! Now in our modern world we are again at war, although, it is not upon our doorsteps. Even so, this does not take away the fact that there are people dying! As churchil spoke of  “more airiplanes more tanks more shells and more guns” we see our current prime minister denying our army of exactly the same. I ask whether Gordon brown would cope and how he would comfort us in a time of fear and slaughter, when he cannot reinsure us during fiscal unrest?

Churchil gave us the “a star of hope” whilst the only stars we are seeing are our political leaders, granting tem celebrity status with our televised debates. Instead of telling us what can be done and how we can use what we do have in our british arsenal to pull our economy free of its burden… we stand and watch as we are told of how the opposing parties cannot achieve this. We all (myself included) have our preferences to whom we would like to see gain power on may the 6th. Although what churchil had was far greater than power, he had the trust of those unsure of what the next day would bring or take away.He had a country , he had its people awaiting his next speech, hanging on his words as that my friends was all they had. Words.

We are not beyond help, we have a national debt! We have a weariness of politicians and an element of hunger both for riches and power lying within some of these. What we have seen on the television and read in the newspapers has by no means built up our hope or faith. We are worried for the future and all we have is that gut feeling that tells us that our party will do their best for our country. So that is what we have to listen to! In turn we try to convince our fellow man to place their trust in the source of our gut feeling. We will encounter supporters being passionate about their party and its causes. When i believe in something , i am not ashamed to admit it. Some of us go too far blinded in a way by fear of our own personal debt growing as a result of the wrong party coming out on top. Although if money is all we have to worry about, we are lucky! We are very lucky indeed.
